Ohio High-Kill Shelter Dogs in Need of Foster Homes!

1. His name is Caesar.  Last Jan for my first cruelty case I ever prosecuted on my own, I removed 4 pit bulls.  3 of these dogs the court awarded to me (Desmond was one of them), 1 I had to return.  I never stopped thinking about that dog and wondering what would happen to him.  Well, as of a few of weeks ago I GOT HIM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Someone found him wandering stray and when I showed up, my heart stopped when I saw it was him!  I got back my little Caesar!!!!  When he was returned to his owner in April of this year, he was heartworm negative.  Well, when we tested him recently, he was positive.  He went through his treatment Dec 18th and 19th and is on low exercise for 30 days.  When that 30 days is up, he will be good to go and healthy as can be.  He was always my favorite of the 4 dogs and still has his great temperament.  He is good with other dogs, not sure about cats.  Very outgoing with people, typical bully personality.  A young guy, I would say no more than 2 years old.  I feel so blessed to have found him and I will definitely not let him slip through my fingers a second time.  Come mid-Janurary when he is all better, we will neuter him.  He is already current on his shots and worming.  I cannot tell you how much this guy means to me:)

2. Thumper is terrific! She is approx 1 year old and full of happiness and joy. She along with 3 other dogs were removed from a residence in late July. All of the dogs were chained outside in the pouring rain with no shelter or fresh water. One of the dogs had been severely wounded by another male dog who got loose and unfortunately did not make it. Thank goodness little Thumper stayed safe and sound! Although she had a rough start in life, this girl is awesome. Her temperament is rock solid and she loves anyone and anything that comes her way. Can jump like a jack russel and run like a greyhound.....this girl is perfect for an active family looking for a companion to go for long hikes or jogs with. Has been paired with several male doggies at the shelter and does just great with them.

3. Nibbles is a great little girl. She was found hidden in a bush one morning, seeking shelter from the pouring rain. She was emaciated and cold with nowhere to go. Thank goodness someone cared enough to get her out of the rain and bring her to our shelter. After scarfing down a bowl of food and two bowls of water, she napped peacefully for hours.  But....now she sits on death row and awaits a rescue to give her a chance at finding a home. Boy does she deserve that chance!!!! Nibbles is about 3 yrs old and approx 45 lbs. She got her name from the fact that her right ear appears to have been "nibbled" on by another doggie. There are a couple of tears in it but other than looking a little funny, it is no biggie! She actually does pretty well around other dogs. She has played with a couple of males and her butt wiggles the whole time she is around them. Not extremely hyper nor lazy....she has just the right amount of energy to her. Very sweet and loving to people.

4. Poor Katie. This gal has been through a lot in her life so far. When she came to us, she was emaciated, cold, and very distraught. She looked to have just had puppies very recently and somehow they became seperated from her. Despite our best efforts, we could never find out what happened to her family. She had some scrapes on her that are now healed and what started out as a thin dry coat of fur is now shiny and healthy. She lightens up whenever taken for a walk and enjoys the company of male doggies! Gage, another dog at the shelter, has become her best buddy! Very sweet and affectionate. She is a more mellow gal and would be a great companion to have sitting next to you as your watching your favorite fall tv shows! She is approx 3-4 yrs old and 45 lbs.

5. Ice is such a gorgeous little bundle of joy! She is 30 lbs and is just about at her ideal weight. She has the most beautifully piercing blue eyes and is such a sweetie. Was found wandering stray with a chord wrapped tightly around her neck. Now she is waiting patiently for her new home. Acts playful and anxious to meet new doggies, shows no aggression toward them at all. Is good on a leash and will sit on command. Although this young gal does like to play, she is also a well mannered lady and will fall asleep right in your lap. Gives kisses and warms your heart instantly.

6. Squeaky is AWESOME! What a happy and well rounded dog this girl is. She was previously owned by someone who thought it was proper to keep her chained outside without shelter or water. They had no idea how great of a dog they were missing out on! She is wonderfully sweet with humans and dogs alike. A young male mixed breed dog is her new best friend and together they keep the party going all day long! What a hoot they both are. Squeaky is approx 1 year old and has been spayed. She is very playful and would be a great dog for a family on the go! Knows "sit" and "shake" on command and loves to be given treats as her reward!

Petie needs a New Home

This pit is a huge ham and willing to learn new things, but as pit bulls can be, is very headstrong and becoming a bit dog aggressive. He would do best in a home as the only pet and with someone experienced with the breed, which I understand is hard to come by as there is such a demand for someone like that! In the right environment, this boy can really prosper.  He's been recently neutered, is up to date on all of his shots, crate trained and housebroken.

The situation he's in is that there are 4 pit bulls all together in the house, and the owner is overwhelmed between her job, running her husbands business (who is indisposed and will be for another year or two), making time for all her dogs and has major health issues preventing her from giving the time required for 4 pit bulls.

Here's what his current owner has to say:

Petie is almost 20 months old. He was one of nine in the litter born April 10th 2006. He is neutered and has all shots up to date. (West Haven Animal Hospital). Has always been an inside dog. Completely house broken. Will run to door when he has to go out and either cry or scratch to go out. Loves attention. Not hyper at all. Very cuddley, thinks he is really little and he is about 70 lbs. Was crated during the day when I was at work but was good on days when I let him out. There were five so they each got turns on being out. When I let all five out they were in to mischief. The dogs had yogurt and treats before I went to work and had their dinner when I came home (6 or so). Jersey the oldest one (5) died and since then the two brothers have struggled to get along all the time. He gets along good with his sister (19 months) and his mom (4 years). My dogs have never been put on runs outside. Will walk on leash, gets a little excited at first but then calms right down to a calm walk. Goes in the car with me. Likes to sit close. I love these dogs with all my heart and sole.

Pit Mix Mom & Pups

Nassau,NY-Nursing mother-8 beautiful pups-MUST GET OUT OF SHELTER PRONTO!

IS THERE A CHANCE THERE IS A REPUTABLE RESCUE IN NJ,PA OR CT  THAT CAN HANDLE A MOM AND PUPS?

THERE HAS BEEN THUS FAR, NO HELP AVAILABLE ON LONG ISLAND, FOR THIS MOM AND HER BEAUTIFUL PUPPIES     :-(    (SEE PHOTOS).

We are really in dire straits.  No one seems to have room for this gorgeous canine family.
Other rescues and shelters also have nursing mothers. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE, THAT IS WHY IT IS HARD TO GET HELP.

I guess no one told NSAL (NORTHSHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE) this fact!

There are plenty of  puppies that need homes in NY--- -even if they are NOT purebred.

The people that stood on line for hours, to get a pup at NSAL -where are they now?  :-(

Pic attachments are below. EVERY SINGLE PUPPY IS GORGEOUS!

So far we managed to only get one Mom and family out. This family is still stuck in on Long Island in a high kill shelter :-(

If you can think of anyone reputable in rescue, that can help, please advise. Thanks.
I have email problems so be sure to cc Diane at :

Honestly, she is not the prettiest dog here, actually she kinda looks like a pig, but she is the kindest. She is loving, friendly, sweet, and so much fun. If someone would just give her a chance, she will make an amazing and loyal pet. Looking for a warm and loving home.

Senior Pit - Cinderella

Please be her Prince  Charming

PLEASE CROSS POST FAR AND WIDE!

Cinderella is living proof that beauty is more than skin deep.  She came into the shelter in June, and has watched many adopters glance and pass by her cage.  Although the staff finds her to be sweet and gentle, no one has shown interest in her.  It is remarkable that this sad soul has not given up hope in humans. Whenever her cage is approached she will come to greet you in her most gentle manner.  Cinderella is approximately 8 to 10 years old, and 51 lbs.

She is in a shelter that is housing 100+ dogs.  Cinderella awaits her prince charming in a shelter with a dangerously high population.  You really need to see her to appreciate what a wonderful dog she is.

If you cannot help.  Please forward.

Thank you.

Please Help Braveheart!

This is our first case that Bikers Against Animal Cruelty has taken under their wings.  As we are just starting up, we could really use all the support you can give.  Our application for Tax-Exempt status is currently pending, but we anticipate being a 501(c)(3) organization very soon.

Braveheart is a very special little ham.  He was picked up as a stray off the streets and is currently at the Wallingford Animal Shelter. He hobbles around on 3 legs constantly wagging his tail and loves meeting new people and other animals.  He is a gentle soul that has a lot of love to give.  We would like to see him comfortable and healthy again before he is adopted out.  Once he has his surgery, there is a foster home all set up for him so that he may recover in a warm & safe environment.  We will keep you posted on Braveheart's progress as we try to mend this helpless little guy so some lucky family can open their home and hearts to him, because he has many more years in him to give.

Subject: Pitbull Help

We were referred to you through a friend, hoping you can help us.

We have a male six year-old pitbull that we must get rid of. He is a good pet, but does not like other animals. I feel if someone had more time for him, he would be better behaved. We have five children and Leathal is not getting his fair share. Every chance he gets he attacks our neighbors dogs and chickens. He has broken chains, stainless cables, runs, and leashes to get at them. Please help! I hate to have him put down or used for fighting. He is great with all the kids and is neutered.

Hey Melissa,

Sorry I don't check this mailbox as often as I should.  Sounds like Leathal is living up to his name.  Before you give up on him, have you tried seeking the help of a trainer?  Someone who understands the psychology of dogs may be able to help him be a better companion and not so "Lethal".

If you've exhausted all other resources in trying to make it work with him, of course I will do my best in finding him a good home.  Please send me some pics of him and his history (neutered, shots, etc.).

Thanks,
Cindy

UPDATE 5/12/2007:  DEXTER HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!!

Posted 5/31/2007

Dexter - URGENT - NEEDS RESCUING FROM EUTHANIZATION

This is from a volunteer at the shelter:

His name is Dexter,  and he's on death row for just being him.   3 months ago when they picked him up off the streets,  he was a walking skeleton, it hurt him just to breath..  I dropped off chkn dinners for him often and now he's just one adorable beefcake.   buttt.............

The pound just put down a husky for no good reason that came in after him.  When they've been in for a long time , they make up excuses to "whack"em,  Really, thats what they say when they euthanize. They never tell the volunteers on what they're going to do.

I estimate that dex is about 3ish. I don't think that he's up to date on any shots. He was a walking skeleton when they picked him up on the street. he's not fixed. I believe that he's ok with dogs but I'm not sure about children. It looks like he had a ruff road and that he's cooperative with just about anything.

I'll take care of all the cost.

See Dexter on Petfinder:  http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=8451282

Duke the Pit Bull - Falsely Accused - Needs Help!

My name is Denise Menendez and I have a pit bull that has been impounded since December 26th,2003.
A neighbor (not one from my block but through the woods on the next block)filed a complaint about my 2 pit bulls. There was a court date in November, that my husband arrived to 10 minutes late. There was some confusion on our part due to the fact it was a certain court house case but it was being heard at a different court. When he arrived he was told that the case was heard and that we would be sent papers explaining everything. Which we received a few days later. It was ordered that " both pit bulls be confined permanently indoors OR in an enclosed and locked pen" and then the order goes on to give specific dimensions for the pen. The order also states " additionally the Menendez family shall securely chain and muzzle both of the dogs and the dogs shall be under physical restraint of a responsible person when they are outside or in the presence of other people." We chose to keep the dogs indoors, thinking we were obeying the order. We didn't realize that we could have fought to get the dangerous dog title removed or exactly what that term meant. We thought if we kept them indoors everything would be ok. Well it wasn't.

The same neighbor filed a second dangerous dog complaint stating that my dogs attacked and seriously hurt a dog owned by him. Needless to say we were back in court. I am trying to stick to the facts of the case but this neighbor has had numerous interaction with the animal control people, they know who he is because they have been to his house on many occasions due to the fact that his animals are always being picked up for being at large. So who can say what really happened to his dog.
So we had our second hearing where we presented witnesses who testified that my dogs were crated the whole night in question and he and his witnesses had conflicting testimony. Not only did their stories not coincide they couldn't tell the court an accurate description of the dog attacking. They presented pictures they took of my dogs while they were impounded, the 2 pictures were of the same dog and not the dog they said did the attacking. They described the dog doing the attacking as (and I quote)
" the one with more white on the chest", male or female or even the brown one or the tan one but the one with more white on its chest. I felt really good after this hearing, I felt my lawyer disproved his evidence and his witness's testimony.

I cant even describe the disappointment and pain my whole family felt when the judges decision which was " that one dog attacked while the other stood by", all of the witnesses for the complainant were in fear of the dogs and that the witnesses testified the pictures of the dogs they brought as evidence as those present at the time of the attack. Ordered that the town warden shall immediately destroy on of the pit bull dogs owned by Denise Menendez, specifically, the pit bull which is distinguished by the larger area of white located beneath the collar and on the upper chest. The other pit bull shall be released to the owner upon proof of compliance that the owner has put up the pen."

Immediately we had a order to show cause for a motion for stay. We also started the process for an appeal. I tried to do things the right way...I called the Nassau county bar association for the name of an attorney who dealt with animal law. I wanted to make sure I would get someone who knew what they were doing. Well I was given the name of Karen Copeland. I promptly called her, we had a brief discussion and she told me that she doesn't handle appeals but an attorney who once handled an appeal for her and won is Alan Goldberg and that he is on the ASPCA list. Immediately I gave him a call. After a short time he returned my call and spoke with my husband, they went over the details of the case to which Mr. Goldberg told my husband that he wasn't available but one of his partners would handle the case. He too was supposed to have been on the ASPCA list. So it was agreed that Paul Block would represent me. I sent via Federal Express all the case information as well as a copy of the transcript from the hearing. From that point which was March of 2004 until August 18, 2005 nothing was done for my case to go forward. The only thing done was motions for new stays because the ones I had kept falling due to the fact that my attorney never anything once he was granted a stay. I asked my attorney numerous times to send me a copy of the appeal and each time I got a new song and dance. On August 18, 2005 I sent a complaint letter to each one of his partners telling them how he did nothing and that yet another stay had fallen on August 5th. A majority of the time my dog has spent in the shelter is due to my lawyers inefficiency. In December of 2004 I consulted another attorney who had spoken to my attorney. My attorney told the new lawyer that the case was ready and he was all set to go. So in hearing that information the new attorney felt that since my attorney was ready to go and that I had already invested time in the old lawyer that I should stay with him so I did.

Well the brief was finally filed in December of 2005 to which there was no opposition. then came a motion from the complainant to be allowed to enter opposition due to the fact that he was busy with another case so he never got to file one. So the court let him enter his opposition. A postcard came in the mail saying that oral arguments would be heard may 9th in central Islip. I called my attorney to make sure he would be there and he was. His oral argument was lame, one of the arguments he used was something that I said to him while we were waiting to be called. My husband would have done a better job and at a better price.

Well the final decision has finally come down and they want to destroy one of my family. I cannot explain the pain. There were just so many things that went wrong with this case. Nobody ever came to see this dog that was supposed to be dangerous. The people at the shelter were not allowed to get involved but they all love him and want to see him come home. Pam Greene called Suffolk life and had an article put in about him. I have been trying to call anybody who can help him. I had his behavior evaluated and the gentleman who did the evaluation is trying to help get Duke home. I am at the end of my rope I don't know how to get some one to help my dog. Is there some way you could print a story about him? Maybe someone will see his story and want to help. If you call the shelter they will tell you all about Duke or even if you would like to see him he is in cage 11. I hope you can help.

My name is George. I am a 5 year old, 10 pound dachshund mix. I am incredibly intelligent and extremely trainable. I am highly devoted and love to snuggle, especially under the covers. When in the house, I get along with other animals. On the street, I sometimes snarl at the bigger dogs but I have NEVER attacked or bit anyone. I require a peaceful living situation as I get excited easily. I would probably be happiest in a family without children. I am neutered and am up to date on all my shots

Cordelia - Hurricane Katrina Rescue

Cross Post

"I have taken in a new addition. I believe I mentioned this girl a  month or so ago.  Cordelia is a hurricane Katrina survivor. She spent three WEEKS in her owner's house with no food and minimum water. She was finally rescued from the house but her owner turned her over to rescue. He had lost everything of course, and just couldn't afford to keep her. She had every parasite, internal and external, known to man.

She has been nursed back to health, she is spayed, housetrained, great with kids, cats and other dogs. A really sweet girl. Very active :-). She is about 3 years old.

I would LOVE to find a home for her that would be interested in performance, therapy or SAR. She is very bright and willing. There is a minor issue with seperation anxiety, but if she gets plenty of exercise and attention it isn't a problem.

If anyone knows someone looking for a GREAT companion please let me know.

I have attached a couple of recent pictures.

Subject:  Two Black Labs Need A Home - URGENT

Please crosspost or forward to everyone you know. The owner has terminal cancer and can't care for them anymore, and he'd really like to find a home for them while he's still able. He's heartbroken and hopes to find a family who can take both together.

Details: Black Labs, Male, Adult, Altered. They are about 4 years old.

Darling Hunter and Fame are two gorgeous pure-bred labs, brothers, who find themselves needing a new home now that their owner has become too ill to care for them. They are truly wonderful dogs. The owner's  grandchildren can crawl all over them and like a typical lab; they just lay there and love it. Both are neutered, and up to date on their shots. They are housebroken and are very well behaved. We would love to keep these two boys together if possible; they are the best of friends.

1/30/2007 UPDATE:  GAME has been recovered!!!!

Update on Game from one of the volunteers:  He was brought in on Saturday for the reward money. Gave a story about how he found him being walked by a little boy  and was told he paid $50 for him. He told the kid the dog was his and took him. He looks healthy-came in on a pink leash without a scratch! We would love to find him a good home so if you know anyone please have them call/come in.He has been in the shelter for 4 months already and still has a solid temperament. We hope the publicity will get him a lot of interest.

Staffordshire Stolen from New Haven Shelter

Please Crosspost!

I just received this from one of the volunteers at the shelter.

"One of our staffies was stolen from the shelter yesterday. His name is Game and he is a large impressive black brindle with a bad ear crop job.-but despite that he looks mean he is a sweetheart. We are so worried about him and put out a cry to the public to get him back on channel 8 last night. Poor guy has been waiting for a home for 4 months and has such a solid temperament."

He's probably in the New Haven area still.

Shelter Fears Pooch Stolen For Dog Fighting

POSTED: 6:25 pm EST January 25, 2007

UPDATED: 10:49 pm EST January 25, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Volunteers at a New Haven animal shelter are searching for a dog stolen during working hours.

Friends of the New Haven Animal Shelter are offering a $1,000 reward for the return of a dog that was stolen earlier in the week.

Staff of the shelter said they fear that whoever stole Game does not have the best intentions for the dog.

Workers said they are afraid that the dog thief took Game with illegal dog fighting in mind. New Haven Animal Shelter workers said Game would not defend himself well in a fight with another dog.

The workers encouraged the thief to bring Game back to the shelter and get the reward with no questions asked.

Can you guys please help me get the word out on this gorgeous boy for me? Its sounds as if he's had a pretty rotten life, and I'd really like to see him get someplace safe and be able to know what a real family is. As much as I'd love to help him, I just have no room. Tracy is desperately trying to find a place for him to go. You can read his story below. Tracy also said he has displayed absolutely no dog aggression when around other dogs. Tracy and Humphry are running out of time quickly as she needs to find a place for him THIS WEEK!!. Can you guys help us get the word out on him?

Thank you!

Subject: Fw: Humphrey, SWEET young boxer pit bull mix in Atlanta
I am desperately looking for a place for this wonderful boy to go. I found him in a very bad part of Atlanta and the people have said that they would release him to me. I have six dogs at my house and can't have another. He is currently living in filth, is tied up and is in a very dangerous section of town where there are many waiting to steal him and use him for fighting or for breeding purposes. The family who has him took him a couple of months ago when neighbors left him to die. This family financially and emotionally can't provide for him. I took him Thursday to the vet and he is now fully vaccinated, neutere and heartworm neg. He is very very sweet and was very gentle and affectionate with my eight-year old daughter who tagged along. He has little shelter to speak of and is tied on a short cord and is confined to small space with his feces all around. >>>
